Brandon Kewalramani Wins 2016 Simi Valley City Championship!
Only one golfer in the Simi Valley City Championship shot two rounds of under-par golf this weekend. That gave Simi Valley resident, Brandon Kewalramani, the tournament trophy and a decisive 4 stroke win over the field. Kewalramani, a student at Harvard Westlake, shot 6 under par 65 on Saturday and followed that with a one under par 70 on Sunday, for a winning total of 135. Alone in second place was Eric Kim of Northridge with rounds of 73-66 for a two-day total 139. Three players shared third place at 140 or 2 under par. They were Jesse Arian (La Crescenta), Tim Snyder (Thousand Oaks), and Brandon Shin (North Hills). In a tie for 6th place, with scores of 1 under par, 141, were Joey Herrera (Fillmore) and Ricky Castillo (Yorba Linda).
According to Simi Hills General Manager and Head Professional, Brian Reed, the course was in amazing condition for golfers this weekend. “This is our premier event of the year,” said Reed, “and we’re proud of the way our grounds crew prepares the course to be at its best for this event. We think that course condition, as well as the “big tournament” feel and service we provide golfers, has greatly contributed to the success of the City Tournament. This year we drew competitors from Japan (by way of Palm Desert), Long Beach and Yorba Linda, as well as several repeat players from the Bay area and San Diego. Golfers don’t generally travel that far unless they receive an exceptional experience.”
Twenty-one years ago, Bob Valerio, now living in Hawthorne, won the Simi Valley City Championship. This year, he took top honors in the Senior Championship flight, scoring even par 142 over two rounds. In second place was Dave Crawford (Camarillo) at 2 strokes over par 144, followed by last year’s winner, David Eberstein (Granada Hills) at 148.
Jim O’Connell (Carlsbad) shot a two-round total 151 (9 shots over par) to win the gross competition in the A flight. One shot behind was Josh Lipman (Moorpark), shooting 152, followed by Jason Dubrovo (Northridge) at 154. For the A flight net score competition, Jeff Harkness (Simi Valley) and Nate Patena (Simi Valley) completed the tournament tied at 2 over par, 144. In third place, tied at 145, were Robert Finch (Santa Clarita) and Sunny Bhullar (Thousand Oaks).
The B flight gross score champion is Mike Dom (Simi Valley), who shot 18 over par 160 in two rounds. Dom won over Gary Mickelson (Simi Valley) and John Dandurand (Moorpark) by one shot. The B flight net score championship went to Nabih Khoury (Simi Valley). Khoury’s two round 5 under par net score of 137 bested Michael Semder (Simi Valley) by one stroke and Steve Prokop (Simi Valley) by three strokes.
In the Senior A flight, Simi Valley’s Michael Gates took the gross score honors with a 12 over par 154. Second place, one stroke back, was David Vanderhorst (Castaic). Tied for third place, with two-round scores of 157, were Danny Duggan and Dwight Daniels, both Simi Valley residents.
In the Senior A flight net competition, Ross Geller (Simi Valley) bested Bill Tollett (Chatsworth) and Scott Nance (Simi Valley) by six strokes, scoring 10 under par 132 to win the flight.
The year’s Simi Valley City Championship was the 35th anniversary of this event. Next year’s 36th edition is scheduled for June 3-4, 2017.
